More Stars than ever : MICHELIN Guide Germany chronicles a record number for 2022

Despite Covid-19, German cuisine is setting new culinary standards: 326 Michelin-starred restaurants, one new restaurant with three Michelin stars, eleven new Michelin-green star restaurants…


Michelin launches a new edition of its guide Michelin Germany. Even if the Covid-19 pandemic is not over, the choice of restaurants for 2022 confirms the diversity and high quality of German cuisine, despite the difficult conditions. Reflecting this remarkable development, 326 restaurants received a record number, including 1 new 3-star restaurant, 8 new 2-star restaurants and 31 new 1-star restaurants.


A new 3 star restaurant

As a real highlight, the Michelin Guide Germany will publish a new entry this year, increasing the number of three-star restaurants to nine. Shands. restaurant. Eight restaurants awarded two Michelin stars

Another wonder was the plethora of restaurants joining this year's 2-star dining options, with eight new additions. The following restaurants are new to the Michelin Guide Germany list and have received two stars: ES:SENZ in Grassau, etz in Nuremberg and three restaurants in Munich: Tohru, Atelier and Tantris in Deschreibere. The last two are also special cases. Two restaurants reopened after being temporarily closed. Anton Gschwendtner, former head chef of the two-star "OLIVO" restaurant in Stuttgart, took over the kitchen of the studio. The culinary legend Tantris has been working on for decades is celebrating its return with a new kitchen team led by Benjamin Chmura and Matthias Hahn. The 100/200 Kitchen restaurant in Hamburg, the LOUIS restaurant in Saarluis and the Speisemeisterei restaurant in Stuttgart have already received one star, and their performance can be improved to two Michelin stars.


31 new one-star restaurants

With 31 new restaurants earning one star, this year's German edition reaches a record 272 restaurants earning one star! In Frankfurt am Main, two new restaurants have been awarded one star: Masa Japanese Restaurant and MAIN TOWER Restaurant & Lounge. Hamburg also has two new one-star restaurants, Jellyfish and Zeik, as well as Handwerk and Votum in Hannover. Munich deserves a special mention: In addition to Mountain Hub Gourmet, the Michelin Guide awarded two new restaurants, Werneckhof Sigi Schelling and Tantris DNA, one star each. The latter is under the same roof as the new 2-star restaurant Tantris. As a whole, the duo were also named "New Openings of the Year" by the Michelin Guide.


18 new Bib Gourmand restaurants


The "Bib Gourmand" award for the best value for money continues to generate great interest from restaurateurs and guests alike, at an affordable price that makes it worthy of a quality certification. A total of 297 Bib Gourmand restaurants are listed in the Michelin Guide this year.

Eleven New 'Green Stars' for Eco-Friendly Cuisine

A total of 61 restaurants will be awarded Michelin Green Stars in 2022, reaffirming the importance of sustainability in the gastronomy world. Since the introduction of the award in the Michelin Guide Germany 2020, the number of Michelin Green Star restaurants featuring environmentally friendly and resource-efficient management has grown steadily. Eleven new restaurants will be added this year, with chefs dedicated to eco-friendly cuisine. In addition to its implementation in the restaurant industry, the initiative relies on the use of regional and seasonal products, consideration of sustainable aspects, short transport routes, animal welfare, energy saving and waste avoidance as well as employee sensitivity and training on climate-friendly working methods . With concrete measures like this, the industry demonstrates the importance of sustainability for future-oriented cuisine.


The Michelin Guide selects two winners

The Michelin Guide presented two awards this year: "Mentor Chef" and "Reopening of the Year". Johannes King from the Söl'ring Hof on Sylt was named "Mentor Chef". The former owner of the two-star restaurant Rantum has now handed over the management of the restaurant to his chef, Jan-Philipp Berner. Over the years, King has passed on his expertise and knowledge to numerous chefs and to the next generation of chefs. The award is presented in partnership with Blancpain. The "New Opening of the Year" award went to Munich restaurant duo Tantris and Tantris DNA. When it reopened, the veritable cult address united Tantris, which also earned two Michelin stars, and Tantris DNA, which also had a new star.
